Why do you have a balanced calendar?
A balanced calendar allows for more learning and less review, since students retain more over a shorter summer and get refreshing breaks throughout the year.
What happens when my older kids are on a traditional calendar and my younger kids are on the Evergreen calendar?
You may soon find that your older kids still need to be home at the end of summer for sports or other extracurriculars that start weeks before school does. Also, many families find this is an opportunity to have more one-on-one with their children. While some kids are in school, others are out, and vice versa.
I work. How can I have my kids home for different weeks during the school year?
Enrichment weeks are offered in February and October, giving kids the option for fun, educational activities. Some families enjoy taking their vacations during these less busy travel times.
Is daycare offered before and after school?
Yes. Children may attend “Gathering Time” as early as 7:30am, and may stay as late as 6:00pm. An hourly rate is charged, reflecting the actual time spent at Gathering Time. A discount is offered for two or more children within the same family.
How does Evergreen differ from a Montessori school?
Evergreen’s classroom instruction is much more structured. There is also an emphasis on working as a team to investigate and come to conclusions, rather than working alone to come to individual answers. The ultimate goal is to learn about the world that God created and to become the best servant of God in that world, rather than becoming the best “me” I can be.
How is multi-age learning different from split classrooms?
Split grade classrooms are just that: two grades put in one classroom. A multi-age classroom does not distinguish between grades. Groups are formed by skill and developmental stages, learning according to their readiness, and they work together as teams.
What if my child has special needs or is gifted in a particular area?
Evergreen has a lot to offer to both kids who are behind and those who are ahead because of different learning needs. The multi-age classroom gives opportunity for many levels of achievement, and inquiry-based learning encourages a curiosity that moves every child forward. We also have resources available for special needs through the Christian Learning Center and classroom aides.
How can parents be involved at Evergreen?
It’s easy to plug into life at Evergreen, since we always need our parents! You can jump in anywhere, by serving hot lunch, becoming a room parent, helping with playground duty, volunteering in the library, or reading with kids who need extra practice. The School Spirit Team, the Education Committee, and the Marketing Team are always looking for willing participants. While there is no set requirement, we like to see parents helping in at least one capacity. It gives you a chance to meet other parents. Social events are planned throughout the year to give families a chance to interact.
How much homework should my child expect?
Evergreen has a minimal homework policy, believing that most work should be done in the classroom. Each team will have some math work to take home once a week, and all students are expected to read or be read to daily.
I’m not sure I can afford the tuition. Is there help available?
Yes. For more information, please visit the Grand Rapids Christian School website. A link is available from our home page.
